Jesus’ message is to:

1) The person who is sent/speaking

2) The person who is listening

Time is short, repent while there is time. The time to spread the gospel is now. The time to respond to the gospel is now.

No Reason to Wait

Sometimes we are the answer to our own prayer. Instead of looking out, look within.

Vs 4-11

~Be careful about becoming weighed down by too many things. God has not called anyone to accumulate stuff.

~Learn to live off what God is giving, what you are receiving...make do with what you have.

“Happy is the man who is already happy with what he already has.”

~Minister to people wherever you go. Our encounters with people are not coincidence.

~None of us have much time left, and many people we try to reach will have nothing to do with Jesus. Move on to someone else knowing that the Holy Spirit may use a worker coming behind you. There were workers before you, there are workers coming after you.

Always forward, never backward!

Allies and Enemies

 Allies:

There is one path to the Father, many paths to Jesus.

If we love Jesus we must learn to love each other as Jesus does.

We can’t love at arm’s length.

Filling Your Role

Who else is ready to step in and fill the role:

Wives; mothers; grandparents; teachers; coaches; pastors; cousins; friends (peers); movies/sports; social media…

"The 7 Deadly Sins of Parental Responsibility,” 1) Replacement of parental authority with peer subculture. 2) Decision making based on consensus rather than principle. 3) Establishment of routines in which children spend more time with each other than with an adult. 4) Educational practices that focus more on emotions and self-esteem than character and intellect. 5) Dismissing as unimportant lapses in tact, propriety, and orderliness. 6) Gravitation of the media toward gruesome and prurient themes. 7) Viewing prescription drugs as a cure-all for problems of behavior and character."

Text: Luke 9:49-10:1

~You think you will follow Jesus until your comfort zone is tested.

~He was concerned about caring for his father until he died. Wait.

~Wait

Every excuse is reasonable.

Have you noticed that God usually calls those who are working to work for Him, people who are busy to be busy for Him? He calls you from something to something else, to leave in order to go.

Have you noticed that Jesus asks things of people that they won’t do?

Jesus does not want part of you but all of you!

A mission board executive wrote to David Livingstone in Africa asking if there was a good road to his remote outpost.  "If so," he said, "we have a couple of men who would like to come and help you."  The famous missionary wrote back,  "If they need a good road, don't send them.  I need men who can come, road or no road."

How do you treat those in need?

Our relationship with Jesus is tied to our relationship with those in need. The needy are the ambassadors of Jesus. Jesus is the Ambassador of God.

~“The only way to be foolishly happy in this world is to be young enough, well enough, and have money enough--and not give a care about other people. But as soon as you don't have any of the first three, or if you have compassion for the weeping world around you, then it is impossible to have the foolish kind of happiness that I believe some Christians present as Christianity.”

~George Washington, "How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these."

If you have Jesus, everything else will be okay.

Text: Luke 9:37-45

~Jesus with His disciples: what is the opposite of love? _______

~The disciples and the crowd would have been happy for Jesus to stay around and keep doing what He’s doing…until they die, then they will be glad He kept His appointment with the cross. People are always looking at the temporal, Jesus is always looking at the eternal.

Pilgrim's Progress,   "I remember now what my mother has told me, namely that the way to heaven is like a ladder and the way to hell is like down a hill.  But I'd rather go up the ladder to life than down the hill to death…I must continue, for to go back means nothing but death.  To go forward is the fear of death, but beyond it is life everlasting.  I'll keep going forward."

Hearing Jesus

Text: Luke 9:28-36

~Disciples of Jesus: we are equal but not the same. None of us grow spiritually at the same rate…and the rate fluctuates

~”To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord…” Heaven is never far away.

~Peter, James and John. Jesus uses us in spite of ourselves, not because of ourselves.

~”Hear Him!”

In the Spirit, hearing is more important than seeing. 2 Corinthians 5:7,

The angel didn’t tell the shepherds anything they weren’t waiting to hear.

A return to Joy! Jesus didn’t come to save it, He came to save you!

Requirements for Discipleship

Text: Luke 9:20-26

Becoming a Christian is a lot about Jesus saving you from what you’ve done wrong. Being a disciple is a lot about your decision to start doing right. Vs 22 is about what Jesus did to save you, to be a payment for your sins. Vs 22 is about Jesus giving His life for you. Vs 23 is about you giving the rest of your life for Him.

Requirements for discipleship:

Deny yourself; pick up your cross (burden, suffering, etc); every day, not once in a while; exclusively for Jesus; lose your life, give up your life for Jesus; be more concerned with the things of the soul than worldly things; begin being proud of who you are in Jesus.   Not ashamed

Why in the world would anyone hear what Jesus says about being His disciple and still want to be one?

2) __ ______? A desire for the rest of my life to count for something more, for something eternal.

Who is Jesus to you?

Need Never Takes a Break

Text: Luke 9:10-17

~Need never takes a break. Ministry is open ended, the work is never done.

~Jesus didn’t say, “Stand back and watch this!” He said, “You, feed them.” You don’t get to choose, Jesus chooses.

~Disciples are very practical, Jesus is very supernatural. We very easily dismiss the impossible so we can concentrate on the reasonable. Our ministry is never going to reach the level of walking by faith until we deal with the impossible Jesus asks of us.

~The disciples ended up with more than they started with. When you finally get serious about Jesus, he doesn’t ask for what you have, He asks for all you have. But you will end up with more than you started with!

What does “ready” mean? When will you be ready, when will you feel ready?

Ravi Zacharias, "There was a woman who wanted to know how she could rid herself of her miseries.  She was told to go from door to door and when she found a home where there were no worries, to ask there for a morsel of grain.  She returned a long while later saying she had not found a single home that fit that description.  In fact, she had become so involved in hearing of the heartache of others that she had forgotten her own."

Resurrection, New Life, New Spirit...A New Start

Jesus moves from being “over there”  to “in here.”

Ephesians 5:18, “…be filled with the Spirit.”

The Two Cups

The First Cup: Jesus and the woman at the well. John 4:13-14  To be filled is a choice. Jesus has chosen you, now you must choose Him.

The Second Cup: It’s happening right now.

Philippians 2:17, 2 Timothy 4:6

George MacDonald,  "There is a woman who has met a sudden sorrow.  'I wish I'd never been made!' she exclaims petulantly and bitterly:  to which her friend quietly replies, 'My dear, you're not made yet.  You're only being made - and this is the Maker's process.'"

Grace, Leading to Resurrection

Text: Philippians 2:1-11

~9-11 Jesus will be the ultimate Judge

~1-5 Humble yourselves, like…

~6-8 Jesus humbled Himself…God limited Himself.

Notice: the trial before the Sanhedrin court; the judgment and sentencing before Pilate and Herod; the Roman soldiers as they beat and tortured Jesus, as they and the Jews mocked Him as He hung on the cross, slapped Him, pulled out His beard; His closest friends as most of them deserted Him and denied Him

C.S. Lewis, “For the real question is not what are we to make of Christ, but what is He to make of us?  The picture of a fly sitting deciding what it is going to make of an elephant has comic elements about it."

~A covenant with God was broken when Adam and Eve sinned, and when we sinned, and separation from God is the result. Jesus paid the price required to bridge the separation and make us right with God again. We must humbly accept…grace.

Jesus sees what we cannot see.

Text: Luke 8:40-56 (48-56)

 The Bible gives us only hints as to what happens at the death of our physical body: The trichotomy of man, Hebrews 4:12,  Genesis 2:7.

Paul, “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”

To Jesus, this girl is not dead, not missing or lost. He knows exactly where she is, and she is not far.

 Jesus sees what we cannot see.

Jesus, “Do not be afraid…

Only believe…

She will be made well…”

Part of faith and obedience is believing that Jesus sees what we cannot see and knows what we cannot know, and with that He is always doing what is best for us.

Get in "Touch" with Jesus

Text: Luke 8:40-56 (43-48)

~The Jews added oral tradition to Moses’ law to make this woman’s life miserable. She was segregated from society in every way because of her health. To make matters worse, the Jewish nation also believed her physical condition was due to her specific sin, as they would view a leper.

~Jesus knows the differences in touch. He knows the difference between curiosity, faith, desperation, hope.

~When you touch Jesus and He touches you, the flow of power is always one way—from Him to you. There is nothing you can do to hurt or help Him. It’s always from Him to you.

~  ”Daughter”

If you can hear, “child of God,” that’s all you really need to hear.

Jesus loves me just as I am and loves me enough to not leave me as I am.

The Church, a Family, a Body

Message: The church, a family, a body

Text: 1 Corinthians 11:17-33

"Wait for one another.”

The strong for the weak. The fast for the slow. The rich for the poor. The blessed for the struggling.

John 3:7, “You must be born again.”

You did not get to choose your first family. This family, you get to choose.

Being born again into the family of God is not about a process, a prayer, but a person…Jesus Christ!

Romans 10:9

Desperate Need

Message: The Gospel according to Luke Text: Luke 8:40-56

The year Jairus’ daughter was born this woman fell sick. Their paths cross 12 years later.

Why is her healing not enough? After all that Jesus had done for you, why won’t He just leave it at that?

In this crowd, who was the most interested in this scene between Jesus and the woman?

Like actors in a heavenly play our ministry is to deliver the lines the Holy Spirit gives us, on cue. God is the playwright, knowing the play, “the end from the beginning.” We don’t know the scenes to follow, but God does.

The circle of life, Psalm 50:15
